History of the Grand Trunk Warehouse
The Grand Trunk warehouse was built in 1928 and served the Dequindre Cut Railroad Line, owned by the same railroad that owned the Warehouse. The Grand Trunk Western Railroad, often referred to as "GTW" or simply "GT," was a major railroad in the Detroit region known for its transportation of auto parts and cars. The GTW was owned by Canadian National for most of its life as a railroad but operated independently until the late 1990s/early 2000s when Canadian National took over the railroad and controlled it more. By this point, the Dequindre Cut Line had been abandoned since 1998 when it was sold to the Detroit Connecting Railroad and closed in 2002. The building was a cold storage and warehouse building, but in its abandoned state, it didn't take long before a fire broke out in 2005, causing many upper floors to collapse and many other parts of the building to fall apart. In 2017-2018, real estate developer Fernando Palazuelo bought the property alongside the long-abandoned Packard Plant, which is currently being demolished. The future of this building seems to be heading the same way based on the condition and owner of the building.
Recollection from the author
Grand Trunk Warehouse was part of my hunt to explore more abandoned warehouses in Detroit which always seemed to be the cream of the crop of abandoned locations in Detroit, the Grand Trunk Warehouse in my opinion was best one of the three warehouse I documented on this website, but all three where fantastic, part of my appreciation of this building I feel is it was once the warehouse of one of my favorite railroads the Grand Trunk, which is my other half of my photography gig Railroad Photography, but the Architecture was something to really take in, and the graffiti was by far the best I have ever seen for any of the abandoned buildings I have seen
