History of Southwest Detroit Hospital
The Southwest Detroit Hospital, later named the United Community Hospital, is an abandoned hospital located in the Mexicantown neighborhood of Southwest Detroit. It is credited as the first hospital in Detroit to hire and accredit African American doctors and nurses, which was uncommon at the time of the hospital 's opening in 1973. The hospital was a merger of several smaller black-owned hospitals that operated throughout the 1960s, which all worked together to open Southwest Detroit Hospital. Hospitals owned by Black individuals were often seen as subpar, and within a couple of years of opening, a doctor was caught selling illegal forms of amphetamines. Later, 86 additional doctors would be found involved in similar medical malpractice cases. Many of these hearings would go to the state, including a 1990 case that found the hospital had released a patient in an unstable condition. Luckily for the hospital, the state ruled in favor of the hospital. Even though it was still open , the public was aware of the horror stories inside. In 1991 , the original Southwest Detroit Hospital closed. In 1996, a startup company owned by Harley K. Brown bought the building and spent $6 million on renovations to reopen the hospital under the name United Community Hospital. The new hospital opened in 1997. Unfortunately , this would not be a positive development, as Brown's company was found mismanaging funds and owed claims to patients . Instead, money was spent on high- class vacations to various locations, and by 2006, Brown's company, Ulitmed, owed $ 2.5 million in unpaid claims. This led the state of Michigan to determine the hospital was unable to pay debts owed to patients, and shortly thereafter, Ulitmed was dissolved as a company, and the hospital closed in 2006. Since then, it has been abandoned, and in 2017, it was gutted under orders from the City of Detroit due to the blight the hospital had taken on since abandonment. In 2024, the Detroit City Football Club acquired the building and plans to demolish it and build a soccer stadium on the site of the hospital. Today , the hospital is preparing for the early stages of demolition, which have not yet been announced.

Recollection from the author
The Southwest Detroit hospital was a example of beating a dead horse there was little to nothing left of a once short lived hospital of Southwest Detroit. Everything in the hospital was gutted and the only thing that was of note was the basement. Which I will say I never though I would walk on Still Water Ice but the opportunity came when we explored Southwest Detroit Hospital. The hospital now reduced to studs is like a less cool version of Lincoln Park Sears with none of the character. That’s not to say it wasn’t a fun exploration though. I will say the Portholes on the side of the building was almost a bubble of Detroit in each one with many amazing shot opportunities. Not to mention the beautiful view of the Detroit Skyline higher up in the building towards the roof.
outside of the building seen from 20th st.
entering the building from a now empty courtyard area
Gutted in 2017 the whole hospital is a skeleton of what it once was
many doors still remain intact and were saved from the gutting of the building
due to the freezing winter day we ventured inside we get a rare look of the frozen basement of still water
despite being all the water being pumped out in 2011 it has returned.
a about 3 inch layer of ice is the only thing separating the freezing still water from the top air level
many pieces of debris float on top of the frozen ice
many hallways give a very creepy vibe and very decayed look
some major rooms have been striped of what character they once had
back on the 1st floor we see all that remains is the pillars that hold up the structure of the building
skylights line the once hallway
Elevators remain intact with their full shaft
lots of the original graffiti was removed with the gutting of the building
before the gutting the hospital was severely trashed and vandalized
visible from the freeway on each end of the building are circular porthole like windows
On the second floor more pillars line the building
a steep staircase leads up to a extra room
The extra room
from the extra room a unique shot of the tall ceiling is shown
each porthole has a unique snapshot of Detroit inside it
In the main tower the 3rd floor like the second is gutted
some boards have been removed from the building
on the 3rd floor a line of boards lines the former windows of the patient rooms
from afar you can see another building we have explored the CF Smith Warehouse Complex
The Detroit Skyline seen from out one of the windows of the hospital
the remain elevator shafts show just how every square inch of this hospital was vandalized
Even on the upper floors the pillars of the gutting of the building is all that remains
bullet holes in the side of one of the elevator shafts

Though empty a ton of debris lines the ground

Various holes are found on the floors of the hospital
most are cut in such a precise manner it is likely from scrappers
Some Staircase walls are so far decayed
All that remains is metal rods holding the "wall" in place

back on the 2nd floor sunlight shines into a otherwise dark room
back in the basement more dark hallways lined with stillwater
shelves still remain in place
More debris floats in the frozen water
The Basement level shaft is filled about 1/4 up with water
the water makes the hallway clearance look small but it is actually a normal ceiling height
