Boblo Island Memories
Closed 1993
Boblo Island was once a special memory for Detroiters, two boats served the island the SS STE Claire and the SS Columbia, while they were often refereed to as sister ships the boats actually are not, but served the same purpose and thus got put into a sister ship category, the island was a amusement park popular with locals looking to do a daytrip to the island and not vacation, many special events happened on the boats such as the Moonlighting Cruises, the Island was closed in 1993 and the Boats served the island till 1991 which turned the park numbers down a ton, due to people from the US side not having easy access to the island, the Detroit Harbor Terminal building also known as the Boblo Island Detroit Dock was Demolished in 2023, After the island closed the boats had various owners, it wasn’t until 2015 when the SS Columbia was chosen to be restored in NY that the future of the boats were seen in a positive light, Doctor Ron Kattoo of Detroit bought the STE Claire in 2007, but in 2018 a fire spread through the Claire in a welding accident on July 6th, 2018 and the ship was a loss, but Ron still had it in him to save the Memory for Detroiters saying "Yeah, she's 110 years old, but she's well-built and she survived," said boat co-owner, Ron Kattoo. "We are at the point in restoration to where it was a steel skeleton structure ready to be rebuilt." it’s been 6 years since then and the STE Claire is almost ready to host events again, not quite Moonlighting Cruises but maybe one day, the SS Columbia originally seemed to be the lucky one has sat in limbo in its restoration since 2021 and sits in Silo City Buffalo NY
